Custonaci is an agricultural centre but its main economic activity is marble quarrying, especially Perlato di Scilla marble.
The town rose at the end of XVIII century, The settlement expanded around the Sanctuary of Our Lady The Madonna which was already an important a destination for pilgrims in the XVIII century. The 15th century painting of the Madonna is carried in a procession on the last Wednesday in August. Custonaci’s Madonna is also worshipped in Erice where she is the patron saint of the city.
Nearby it is possible to visit the Grotta di Scurati, in which is present a real village, made up of houses and little streets. It was utilized as anti-aircraft shelter during World War II and is the seat of an evocative living crib which takes place every year. Another archaeological area is the Miceli cave in which we can fine engravings belonging to the Palaeolithic period.
Custonaci is not only mountain and marble but it is also a seaside resort with the splendid cornino cove, a popular beach with tourists staying in the area. Over the last few years, Cornino beach has become very a lively in summer following the construction of villas, restaurants and pubs. In Cornino you can experience the landing and procession of the Madonna of Cusonaci who is carried into the bay from the sea and then carried in a procession through the streets of Custonaci. To end this festive day, at around midnight there is a firework display.
