Marsala is one of the most important Sicilian towns for its historical and cultural heritage, it's landscape and its economic strength.
It was founded by the Phoenicians who survived the destruction of Mozia. They gave it the name Lilibeo. Marsala was important through Punic, Roman, Arab and Norman times and these civilisations have all left their mark on modern day Marsala.
Their influences can be seen in the regional archaeological museum "Baglio Anselmi".
